This article shows you how to change a template's canvas dimensions after it has been created — switching between preset sizes, entering custom inch measurements, and swapping the orientation.
Open the Template Settings popover
Canvas resizing is only available when you are editing a base template, not a Studio design. Look for the gear icon (Template settings) in the editor header, next to the template name. Click it to open the Template settings popover.
Choose a preset or enter custom dimensions
The Canvas size section shows the current dimensions (for example, 5" × 7") next to the section label. Use either of the following approaches:
-
Preset — open the Choose a preset… dropdown and pick a standard size. Available presets include:
- Trading Card (2.5" × 3.5")
- Photo 4" × 6"
- Photo 5" × 7"
- Photo 8" × 10"
- Pano 8" × 24"
- Poster 13" × 19"
- Social Square
- Social Story
- Custom size — type directly into the Width (inches) and Height (inches) fields. You can edit the values that a preset filled in before applying.
Swap the orientation
To flip between portrait and landscape, click the Swap width & height button (the double-arrow icon between the two fields). This exchanges whatever is in the Width field with whatever is in the Height field — it works with both preset and custom values.
Apply the resize
- Confirm the Width (inches) and Height (inches) fields show the dimensions you want.
- Click Resize canvas. The canvas updates immediately and the popover closes.
A Canvas resized confirmation appears when the change is saved. If the values are invalid or outside the allowed range, an error message explains what to fix.
What happens to existing layers
Layers keep their absolute positions on the canvas when you resize. If you make the canvas larger, layers stay where they are and new empty space appears around them. If you make the canvas smaller, layers that were outside the new boundary are cropped — they are not deleted, but they will not be visible or rendered until you move them back inside.
After resizing, check the canvas and reposition any layers that have been pushed outside the new bounds.
Two-page templates
If your template has a second page, both pages share the same canvas dimensions. Resizing page 1 automatically resizes page 2 to match — you do not need to open the second page and resize it separately.
Where canvas resizing is not available
The Template settings gear icon is only shown when you are in template-editing mode. It is not available when editing a Studio design. To change the canvas for a design, edit its underlying template instead.
